Job Postings Flat Past Seven Days -

(Albany, NY,  January 30, 2013) –  Job postings in our region and in the state were flat the past seven days. After a good run up after the holidays , the market has cooled a bit, not unusual for this time of the year. “ While the market has been flat the exciting news is that there are plenty of new companies posting jobs – large and small – and that is a good sign as the jobs are across all types on industries and sizes of companies. This opens more opportunities for more people – and that is good”, stated Dan Moran, of Next-Act (www.next-act.com), a career transition management firm located in Colonie.

Postings came in at just about 1525, down from 1575 the week prior.  “The market continues to be  stronger than last year at this point – a trend that is continuing - and that continues to be a good sign. 2013 is looking, at least at this point, to be better than 2012”.

Other markets in NYS saw similar results. The Capital Region continues to still outpace Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, all larger markets with more employers and population.

National Job Scene

Job postings were flat nationally as well. As of 1/30/2013  there were 525,105 job postings this past seven days, from 523,332 the week prior, a very small change.

What really matters … it isn’t money alone …

The biggest mistake people make is not making a living at doing what they most enjoy. - - Malcom Forbes

Why do people leave jobs – why do they stay?

 Is it money alone. NO!

It is much more and a recent Careerbuilder.com survey studied what is important to workers that make the difference between liking where they work, and not. This is telling – and may be the “list” of what you seek in your next career or job.

First off, title isn’t important anymore. The VP, CEO or other title isn’t what drives people. They will switch title for:

  •  Flexible schedule – 59 percent
  • Being able to make a difference – 48 percent
  • Challenging work – 35 percent
  • Ability to work from home – 33 percent

And the perks that were important:
  •  Half-day Fridays – 40 percent
  • On-site fitness center – 20 percent
  • Ability to wear jeans – 18 percent
  • Daily catered lunches – 17 percent
Yes, money is still important – but success in a job or career is much more than money. If you look at the top reason people leave a job – it is management practices: their boss, their bosses boss, lack of communication, lack of direction, lack of growth. I know many (and have been there) who have made gobs of money, but hated their job or company. The money lost its luster over time and they yearned for more. They needed to find their better fit.

Find your “fit” – not just another job …

These statistic continue to emphasize that the right job for you, or right career, isn’t just about the money, but the right company that aligns to your needs, culture that fosters growth, and a culture that values their assets – the people who they employ?

Have it now – great – enjoy the ride! Not feeling that you fit the job or company – get off your duff and so something about it – CHANGE!

You control your career destiny – no one else.: T

Three steps to start TODAY:
  •  Accept that you need to change
  • Commit to taking action to change – and start today – little actions start the ball rolling.
  • Give yourself permission to make a change – say it is okay for you to move on, to explore new options to be fulfilled.
Nothing happens until you do these three steps. What happens next – it can be magic!

And thank you for reading this. –Dan

Job Postings Down As Holiday Hits -

(Albany, NY,  January 23, 2013) –  After two good, solid weeks of results and significant increases in the number of job postings in our region, statewide and nationally, the market cooled a bit likely the effect of the national holiday Monday. “When holidays occur during the week and many employers close down for a day or two, job market activity is affected and we saw this past week beginning last Friday. This will be temporary for sure”, stated Dan Moran, of Next-Act (www.next-act.com), a career transition management firm located in Colonie.

Postings came in at just about 1575, down 200 from the week before. “The market is still stronger than last year at this point and that is a good sign. We are off to a stronger start than last year and I hope this trend continues”.

Other markets in NYS saw the same results and those markets were down slightly the past seven days. The Capital Region continues to still outpace Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, all larger markets with more employers and population.

National Job Scene

Job postings we down a bit over 10% for the past seven days, with larger decreases toward the end of last week. As of 1/23/2013  there were,  on a seven-day-average, 523,332 job postings down from 582,783  job postings nationally the week prior.

What is Hot? We are ...

This is the time of the year when many surveys are conducted to rate what’s hot in an area …

… places to dine & wine

… to be entertained

… to see and be seen

We are so fortunate to have so many wonderful places to explore, try and enjoy in our Region. There is so much to do and see.

And – we live in a region that is hot – yes – hot! (I don’t mean the temperatures!)

I track job market activity on a daily basis and report to the media each week. My story seems to have the same ring – Albany beats Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse for the number of available jobs, and our Albany market is about 25% smaller.

So – we are doing well – and this has been consistent. Even though overall the number of jobs are down in the Region and in the country as a whole (about 35% less than 2010) we still rank high for job opportunities in the market fueled by a number of factors including the development of our nanotechnology semiconductor business in Albany and Malta, new businesses moving into the area to support this development and generally a pretty stable economy unlike other markets in the country experiencing double-digit unemployment and continued job losses. The unemployment rate in our region is 7.3%, below the statewide average and well below the national average.

The region is becoming the “in” place to be …

Over the past few years, our region has been recognized domestically and internationally as the place to be for business. Some of the kudos include:
… and the list goes on.  We have jobs, and it is a hot place to be now – and for the future. What helps is the continued expansion of new ventures in our Region. Global Foundries starts $10 billion expansion with a $2 billion plant, GE continues to grow and the College of Nanotechnology is booming and growing even more. Have you heard about the secret Project Azalea – this could be another technology plant employing 3,000 people – if our market is selected.

So what does this mean to you and your career?

One word – opportunity.

There are and will continue to be new needs for workers in the region in new roles and new careers. Our region is beginning the slow change from the center of state employment (about 24% of workers in the region work in the public sector) to  an area with robust business opportunities and new needs from our workforce.
Now, more than ever before, it is the time to rethink you career direction and determine how you can jump on the bandwagon and ride the tide in our region. There will be needs in manufacturing, logistics, sales & marketing, retail, healthcare, services and more – some requiring more specialized training and some not. There is a huge need for those with “middle skills” – not just high school but one or two years specialized education in a technology or trade – and this need exists nationally as well.

Over the past few years, I have met with many who saw the tide coming and began to plan their next career move to take advantage of opportunities. They saw the changes occurring and seized the opportunity. They began the process of retooling – learning new technologies, skills and more. Many have opened their own businesses as well.

And to the naysayers who put our region down …

We have arrived. We are HOT!

And thank you for reading this. - Dan

Job Postings Continue to Post Strong Gains - up significantly across state and nationally

(Albany, NY,  January 16, 2013) –  Continuing the trend, job postings increased significantly again in the Region the past seven days showing strength in the local job market as we enter the 1st quarter of 2013. Postings averaged 1800 the past seven days, up from 1436 the week prior and just over 1,000 the week before.   “It appears that 2013 is starting strong – stronger than 2012 for the same period for sure, and this is good news for everyone. As reported last week, the job market seems to be picking up earlier this year. For those considering making a job change, don’t wait; for those unemployed this is good news too”, stated Dan Moran, of Next-Act (www.next-act.com), a career transition management firm located in Colonie.

“There has been some other good news in the market which may be buoying employer confidence with the expansion of Global Foundries and other business expansions – that always helps”.

Other markets in NYS did not see the same results and those markets were flat the past seven days. The Capital Region continues to still outpace Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, all larger markets with more employers and population.

National Job Scene

Job posting have surged nationally as well. As of 1/292013  there were,  on a seven-day-average,  582,783  job postings nationally up from

The time is NOW!

Note: See Job Bank announcement below

"Success will never be a big step in the future, success is a small step taken just now. " - ~ Jonatan Martensson

Welcome to 2013 – and the climb begins! Each year I am asked. “Dan – when does the job market pick up after the holidays?”

Is it on New Year’s Day?
Is it the first week in January?
Is it February?

Simple answer – it is now and it is happening.

I am writing this blog on Thursday January 11th. Just this morning my job market report hit the media and the report – oh boy, was it nice.

Jobs in our region – especially the past few days – have surged. In fact, this morning (1/11/13), job postings in the region hit just about hit 2000 – I haven’t seen this number in over seven months – yes, seven months.

I monitor job market activity in the region, defined as a 50 mile radius of Albany, NY. Over the past few weeks, it has been a bit quiet which is expected and normal for the holidays. The holidays have an impact – the fiscal cliff concerns had a huge impact, although the national media says it didn’t – they are dead wrong – look in the “backyards” of communities.

So – been on the sidelines? Jump in now. Don’t wait and certainly don’t listen to the naysayers. Think positive – think success, and you will succeed.

I have included my job report for the week below …

And thank you for reading this. – Dan

Job Postings Show Huge Gains past few days – up significantly across state and nationally

(Albany, NY,  January 9, 2013) –  Job postings increased significantly in the region and across the state especially the past few days as employers seem to have woken up from the holidays and started first quarter hiring plans in a robust manner. Postings averaged 1436 the past seven days, up from 1048 the week prior and this result was consistent across New York state. “Welcomed news for those in the market and observers who may see more confidence in the minds of employers, bucking some local and national polls. The market really begins to pick up in latter January – this is earlier than normal but certainly better – especially after very lean last few months of the year. This is also good news on the heels of the announcement of Global Foundries’ expansion in Malta generating an additional 1,000 jobs. This will have a very positive effect upon our area”, stated Dan Moran, of Next-Act (www.next-act.com), a career transition management firm located in Colonie.

Other markets in NYS reported similar results. The Capital Region continues to still outpace Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, all larger markets with more employers and population.

National Job Scene

As of 1/292013  there were,  on a seven-day-average,  481,432, up from 327,321 the week prior – consistent with results in our region.
